DAY 1 Krakow Old Town – in the footsteps of history and great people

The tour begins in Krakow’s Old Town, which has been a silent witness to the centuries-long history of this city. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful monuments, with St. Mary’s Church, the Barbican, and the Wawel Royal Castle at the forefront. DAY 2: Auschwitz-Birkenau Tour

On the second day of the trip, you will visit the Memorial and Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is one of the most memorable places in the world to commemorate the tragedy of the Holocaust. It is also a place where the fates and sufferings of many nations affected by World War II are intertwined. In this former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, they murdered more than a million people (including over a million Jews, nearly 100,000 Poles, and many other nations). Visiting Auschwitz will be an opportunity to reflect on humanity and seek answers to the question, why did people put people through such a fate?

DAY 3: Wieliczka Salt Mine – a gem on the UNESCO World Heritage List

On the next day of the tour, you will visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It will be an extraordinary journey into the depths of the earth, during which you will see corridors carved in salt, learn about the difficult work of miners and admire the salt sculptures, led by the beautiful St. Kinga Chapel. During the tour of the mine, you will experience the unique atmosphere of the place.

• The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is one of the most important monuments in Poland, and over one million visitors from all over the world visit this unique place every year. It is a unique world-class monument, as evidenced by its inclusion in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. 

• The history of the mine dates back to the 13th century when deposits of rock salt were discovered and salt mining in Wieliczka started. The times of glory survived in the sixteenth and the first half of the 17th century when the mining crew had about 2000 people and the annual salt production in the mine was over 30,000 tons per year. 

Day 4: Krakow Jewish Quarter & Ghetto Walking Tour – the history of Krakow’s Jewish quarter

Are you looking for an attractive way to visit Krakow? I suggest visiting Krakow on a Segway, which is a comfortable means of transport for people of amost all ages. During the tour around Krakow on a Segway, you will see the Old Town and the Jewish Kazimierz district (4 hours tour), but you can also choose any of these routes (2 hours tour). SEGWAY KRAKOW – TOUR AROUND THE OLD TOWN

The Old Town in Krakow is a place full of historical buildings from various centuries, traces of famous people, but also a modern space teeming with life almost 24 hours a day. Visiting consecutive places from the tour program you can learn about the history of the city, see the traces of famous Poles or admire the pearls of architecture in different styles. During the tour it is also worth to soak up the atmosphere of the city, considered by many to be unique.

Krakow Segway tour will start with a short training and riding lesson (due to the intuitiveness and ease of driving the device the whole thing takes only a few minutes!). Then we will head towards the Barbican and the defensive walls surrounding the Old Town, paying special attention to Florian’s Gate. Along the walls numerous artists exhibit their works, offering passers-by both Krakow’s landscapes, still lifes and modern paintings in various guises. Along the route we will pass the Princes Czartoryski Museum, and then ride the Segway through St. John’s Street, which will lead us straight to the Main Square.

Market Square

On the Market Square we will spend a few minutes admiring St. Mary’s Church, the Cloth Hall and the Town Hall Tower. We will also be able to feel the unique atmosphere of this one of the largest squares in Europe. Stalls with flowers, pigeons and carriages are an inseparable element of this place. Not to be forgotten is the bugle call from St. Mary’s Tower, which for several centuries has been played every hour to the four corners of the world.

After the visit to the Market Square we will direct our Segways to the next stage of the route, admiring the Collegium Maius, the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University. The next point of our tour will be the Bishop’s Palace, which has become an important place thanks to the meetings of Pope John Paul II with young people, which he conducted while standing in one of the windows. By the way, we will be able to see the Franciscan Church located opposite the Palace, which attracts the eye with its raw brick facade.

While continuing our tour, we will direct our vehicles in the direction of Wawel Hill. This is the place where kings of Poland resided for centuries, and the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral are among the most important monuments on the map of Krakow. At the foot of the hill we will visit the statue of the Wawel Dragon, the hero of one of the most famous Krakow legends. Then we will go in the direction of Grodzka Street. The Segway tour of the Old Town will end at the Baroque Church of St. Peter and Paul.

KAZIMIERZ – SIGHTSEEING BY SEGWAY

During the second part of the tour you we will visit Kazimierz. This district is primarily associated with the history of the Jews, so during the tour you will see the Old Synagogue – the oldest Synagogue in Poland. By the way, we will also see Helena Rubinstein’s house and Jan Karski’s bench, which are located on Szeroka Street, one of the most important points of Kazimierz, bustling with life not only during the day, but also until late at night.

Further sightseeing of Kazimierz will lead us to the other side of the Vistula River, where we will visit places associated with the Jewish ghetto. We will also go by Segway to the Ghetto Heroes Square, where there is an unusual monument commemorating the tragic history of this place. The guide will tell us about the events that took place here during World War II. The last point of our tour will be the factory of Oskar Schindler, the entrepreneur who saved over 1,000 Jews from extermination.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A Segway tour of the Old Town takes about 2 hours, as does a Segway tour of Kazimierz. The whole tour (Old Town + Kazimierz) takes about 4 hours and you can visit many of the most important historical monuments in Krakow.

We would like to reassure all those who would like to take a Segway tour but have never ridden a Segway before that it is not an obstacle. Riding a Segway is so intuitive that a few minutes of instruction and a few attempts are enough to master the control of the vehicle. Each subsequent minute spent on the Segway becomes pure pleasure, which will remain in your memory for a long time.

The price of the Segway tour depends on the variant of the chosen route. Visiting the Old Town and Kazimierz costs 340 PLN per person, and choosing one part of the tour costs 180 PLN per person. The tour can only take place if there are at least 2 participants.

It is also a place where the fates and sufferings of many nations affected by World War II are intertwined.

Testimonials: I visited Krakow in June, 2019 with some friends. I’d heard that one can’t visit Krakow without visiting Auschwitz. We were late to get our tour set up, but Seweryn came through! He was highly recommended by a friend, and he didn’t disappoint.

FULL TOUR DESCRIPTION

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is a place that for several years of its existence witnessed the death of over 1 million people. Visiting the camp in Auschwitz makes you at least partially aware of the scale of genocide carried out by the Nazis in occupied Poland. I invite you to read the detailed plan of the tour to Auschwitz from Krakow.

The tour starts in Krakow when we pick up our guests from the hotel. The journey by car to Auschwitz takes just over an hour (the distance is about 70 km). After arriving at the place the proper part of the tour begins. The first stage of the tour involves visiting the Auschwitz I camp, and then we will go to Auschwitz II – Birkenau (Brzezinka) which is about 3 km away.

AUSCHWITZ TOUR FROM KRAKOW

During the tour we will learn about the history of the camp, which was first established for Polish political prisoners, and in 1942 it was transformed into the main camp for the extermination of Jews. In Auschwitz-Birkenau over 1 million people died in total. They were mainly Jews (about 1 million), but also Poles (about 70 thousand), Roma (about 21 thousand) and people of many other nationalities. By 1945, when the camp was liberated, only about 7.5 thousand prisoners had survived. Many of them went home immediately after regaining freedom, while others were placed in makeshift hospitals where they recovered.

Some witnesses of those events are still alive today, and on successive anniversaries of the liberation of the camp, they meet at the site to participate in ceremonies commemorating the events of those years. Former prisoners still have camp numbers tattooed on their arms, which, apart from the memories, are indelible proof that the events in Auschwitz really took place.

“Arbeit macht frei”

Even before the tour begins, we can see the gate with the inscription “Arbeit macht frei”, meaning “work makes you free”. Prisoners saw this inscription every day going out to work in the commandos and coming back in the evening. This inscription also appeared on the gates to other German Nazi concentration camps. After the war it became a symbol of the German Nazi concentration camp system, and later also a symbol of Nazi extermination.

A visit to the Auschwitz camp includes a tour of the museum section, which contains, among other things, photographs taken of prisoners and numerous items taken from them during their admission to the camp. These include ordinary things such as shoes, suitcases, and toys, as prisoners were not allowed to carry anything of their own. Newly arrived prisoners were given their number, which was tattooed on their arm, and striped clothing identical to their fellow prisoners.

During the tour of the camp, you can see photos of the prisoners, learn about their daily life in the camp, and learn about the experiments the Nazis performed on the prisoners. Viewing all the elements of the exhibition and the camp buildings is an experience that remains in the memory for a long time. This place makes a huge impression on visitors, showing the scale of the Holocaust.

Auschwitz II – Birkenau (Brzezinka)

After visiting the first part of the camp we will go to Auschwitz II – Birkenau (Brzezinka). It is there that you will be able to see the most horrible places in the camp – the wooden barracks where prisoners lived, but most of all the gas chambers and crematoria. It was there that millions of people of various nationalities, especially Jews, died, and the scale of extermination still evokes horror. Within the camp in Birkenau, railroad tracks have also been preserved, along which successive prisoners, sentenced to extermination, were transported in cattle cars.

A tour to Auschwitz from Krakow starts and ends in the royal city, in the place agreed upon by the participants. It can be a hotel or any other place where the visitors stay. The price of the tour includes transport, a ticket and visiting Auschwitz with a guide.

The entire tour takes about 7-8 hours. This time also includes travel, and the tour of both parts of the camp itself takes about three and a half hours. The trip to tour to Auschwitz from Krakow costs 45 Eur per person.

Most of the visit to the camp takes place outdoors, so it is very important to adjust your clothing to the weather conditions. It is advisable to take care of appropriate footwear, since the ground within the camp has been preserved in its original condition. You should therefore take into account that there may be mud or puddles and therefore it is a good idea to wear appropriate footwear. You should also adjust your dress to the character of the place, preserving due respect for the place of remembrance, which is the site of the camp. Before entering the Auschwitz site, for security reasons, every tourist is subject to personal and luggage inspection.

How long the tour takes? 

Around 3,5 hour. You will visit both Auschwitz and Birkenau (which is about 3,5 kilometers from the Concentration Camp).

What can I take with me? 

Small bags are permitted. Please notice that in Auschwitz is strict security control. You are allowed to take with you only small backpacks, bags (must not exceed 30x20x10 cm) and personal belongings (ex. wallet, mobile). Other things (ex. suitcases) you can leave in a car.

Is there a dress code in Auschwitz?

No, but please remember this is the Memorial place, therefore you should dress appropriately. Please cover shoulders, in the summer season wear dresses or skirts below the knee.

SCHINDLER’S FACTORY – THE PLACE WHERE OVER 1000 JEWS WERE SAVED

The Museum of Schindler’s Factory was established in the original buildings of the factory where pots, pans and other enamel products were produced during the war. Its owner was Oskar Schindler, a German who employed many Jews. At the end of the war he decided to evacuate the factory to the Czech Republic and took over 1000 Jewish workers with him. In this way he saved them from certain extermination. On the basis of this story Steven Spielberg’s film “Schindler’s List” was made. “Schindler’s List, which was filmed in authentic factory buildings. His work was recognized with numerous awards and nominations, including the most important in the film world Oscars, of which he received as many as 7.

Schindler’s Factory is now not only the original factory building preserved from the time of World War II, but primarily a museum showing the history of those times. The permanent exhibition covers the events of World War II in occupied Krakow. It has been designed in such a way as to allow visitors to almost literally travel back in time several decades and feel the terrible atmosphere of those times. During a tour of Schindler’s Factory you can not only watch the exhibits from those years, but also feel the emotions that accompanied the residents of Krakow during the war.

VISITING SCHINDLER’S FACTORY – A WALK THROUGH THE STREETS OF OCCUPIED KRAKOW

Entering the Schindler’s Factory, you can expect typical exhibition halls in which successive collections are presented. Meanwhile, the organizers have prepared for you an extraordinary exhibition which takes you back in time from the very entrance. During the tour you will see a former photographic workshop and an original 19th century Kaiserpanorama . At other points in the exhibition you will find yourself in the Jewish quarter, that is in the Kraków ghetto, and you will feel the cramped conditions there and see a typical Jewish dwelling. Your journey does not end here, because during the tour of the Schindler Factory you will also visit the camp in Płaszów, and at the very end you will learn about the fate of Krakow when it was occupied by the Red Army in January 1945.

During the tour of Schindler’s Factory you not only change your surroundings, passing by successive points on the map of occupied Krakow, but you also have the opportunity to hear music coming from loudspeakers, conversations of residents and see original film recordings. In this way you engage all your senses and after the tour you better understand what Krakow looked like during the Nazi German occupation. During the tour you can also see old photographs, weapons, equipment and objects of everyday use. Perhaps some of them are well known to you, but probably some will arouse your surprise.

Among them there are also heroes such as Oskar Schindler and Tadeusz Pankiewicz, whose deeds helped other people and became an example for future generations.

You will also have the opportunity to learn about the dark side of war, that is the history of those who changed the front and from victims became executioners, informing, beating and mistreating others.
